HSCSJ Organization

The Hindu Senior Citizens of South Jersey (HSCSJ) organization officially started in November 2005†, when a few of the enthusiastic volunteers decided to give a name to the gathering and expand its activities. First such meeting was held on January 19, 2006. Thirty-five seniors attended. They decided to create a new association and chose the name "Hindu Senior Citizens of South Jersey."   The group elected Bhulabhai J. Bhakta as the President and Suraj B. Singh as the Vice President.

The association applied for incorporation and received such a certification from the State of New Jersey on April 5, 2006.

The association applied for Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) and received an EIN (87-0772779) on June 20, 2006. Subsequently, the association applied for Federal Income Tax Exempt Status and received the Tax Exempt status 501(c)(3) from IRS on October 2, 2008.

In the year 2010 Dr. Suraj B. Singh was elected as President.

In the year 2014 Dr. Surendra Gambhir was elected as President. He served for one two-year term. After Dr. Surendra Gambhir, Mr. Ram Arora was elected President in January of 2016. He served for two two-year terms. Thereafter, Virendra K. Gupta served as President starting 2020, also for two two year terms.

In 2024, Bharti R Shah was elected as president, and is supported by Executive Committee she appointed.

The organization used to meet at the ITA Berlin Temple. It now meets at the Indian Cultural Center (ICC) in Marlton, NJ.

For further information regarding the organization, please see the HSCSJ Constitution and the corresponding HSCSJ By-Laws.

†Prior to 2005 there existed other groups and organizations in South Jersey that provided 'seva'  for senior citizens of Indian origin. One of the groups was the Senior Citizens Cultural Club which was led by Mr. K.D. Patel, Ms. Nitiben Chhaya, late Mr. Bhogilal Shah and Ms. Shilpa Mehta. The HSCSJ is grateful to them and others for the time and effort they extended in support of the seniors community. We at the HSCSJ will continue to operate with the same spirit of self-sacrifice.
